New London celebrates Peru's bicentennial
New London — Members of the local Peruvian community gathered Wednesday to celebrate Peru's independence with a ceremony and flag-raising at City Hall.
July 28, 1821, is the day General Jose de San Martin declared Peru's independence from Spain.
New London Mayor Michael Passero presented a proclamation from the City Council honoring the day, which was read in Spanish by City Clerk Jonathan Ayala. The mayor also presented certificates of appreciation to Peruvian owners of various local businesses.
