TV tip: "Bring the Funny"
Bring the Funny
10 p.m. Tuesdays, NBC
I usually love artistic-creativity-inspired reality TV shows. I adore “Project Runway,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” “The Voice” and “Songland.” But “Bring the Funny,” which features comedians, left me unmoved. The contestants are fine but not particularly exceptional; I only giggled a handful of times. The judges — Kenan Thompson, Chrissy Teigan and Jeff Foxworthy — are understated, which is NOT what you want from your reality-TV-show judges (am I right, Mary Murphy?!). Will "Bring the Funny" improve over time? We will see — and, yes, because I’m ever-optimistic, I’ll be watching.

The show has it all, in every direction: some fine, crafty performances in and among dubious comic relief; sadistic payback, preceded by quotations from Elie Wiesel; references to “Encyclopedia Brownstein.”
